South Dakota Librarian Certification
:: 2024 Guide
Librarian certification, or licensure, is South Dakota’s process of gatekeeping the librarian career. When taking care of school-aged children or providing educational programs for the community at large, we want to be sure our librarians are knowledgeable and trustworthy. The two types of librarians required to hold certification prior to employment are school librarians and public librarians. However, the other types of librarians in South Dakota still have a significant barrier to entry in the form of a masters degree in Library and Information Science as a requirement to entry-level positions.
