Virginia Librarian Certification
:: 2024 Guide
Librarian certification in Virginia is the process of creating a knowledge and screening barrier between potential librarians and libraries’ patrons and staff. In Virginia, both school librarians and public librarians are required to complete the certification process prior to employment. With increasingly complicated information technology services being adopted by libraries and the sensitive nature of working with school-aged children, having standardized education and skills as well as a known, clean criminal history background are a benefit to the community at large.
Additionally, most every other type of librarian career has educational gatekeeping in the form of a masters degree in Library and Information Science due to the necessity of a base level of knowledge for even entry-level librarians.
